National History Day 2014
"Rights and Responsibilities in History"
National History Day makes history come alive for students by engaging them in the discovery of the historical, cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's kids are better able to inform the present and shape the future. NHD inspires children through exciting competitions and transforms teaching through project-based curriculum and instruction.
Research at the Bedford Public Library
Fall of 2013
The students would like to thank Tanya Wyckoff and the rest of the Bedford Public Library staff and volunteers for their help in getting the NHD students some library cards and books to start their research this last fall. It is always a pleasure working with them. The students were able to make the trip and have a lesson from Mrs. Drake, the Bedford Middle School 8th Grade Language Arts teacher, on using the card catalog and finding appropriate books for their research topics. We also enjoyed a tour of the Garland Hotel, located in downtown Bedford. Mrs. Lucas gave the tour and showed the students several of the rooms that have been fixed up, including the famous "Jesse James Room".
The students traveled to Graceland University to present their projects to National History Day judges at the District Competition. They had to create a project and go through an interview process. They were asked questions to test them on their research and knowledge of their subjects. They could present their research by writing a historical paper, creating a website, exhibit board, documentary movie, or performing a play. This is a long complicated process that the students have been working on throughout the school year. This was a great experience for all of them that will help prepare them for academic contests in the future.
