National History Day 2015
"Leadership and Legacy in History"
Students begin their research ...
In the Fall of 2014, the Bedford 8th grade class took a trip to the Bedford Public Library. While they were there, Librarian Tonya Wykoff took time out of her busy schedule to get students signed into the library as a card holder. She was gracious enough to spend her morning helping the students get books signed out for their History Day topics. Language Arts teacher Nancy Drake, took time to refresh and explain how the card catalogue works in the library. She showed kids the various ways to look up books and how to find them in the library stacks. Social Studies teacher Bill Ruttenberg helped give students ideas of different key words that they could use to find books on their various topics. He also helped show the students how to find the books on the shelves in the library. Overall, it was a very successful morning. Students were able to tap into a resource that they might not have been familiar with before.
When the students were finished finding their resources, Mrs. Drake and Mr. Ruttenberg took the students downtown to visit the historic Garland Hotel. Mrs. Kay Lucas graciously donated her time and showed the kids around the hotel. She gave them a detailed description of what the hotel and Bedford was like 100+ years ago. The kids were very thankful for the tour and the free calendars that Mrs. Lucas was able to donate. At the end of the morning, the students were able to go back to school with their hands full of new resources and their heads full of daydreams of years past. |
